ArmInfo. Armenia intends to raise with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) the issue of reducing customs duties on a number of sensitive goods for domestic producers. On February 8, at the first meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on Regional and Eurasian Integration, Albert Babayan, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Investments of the RA, said.
According to him, by joining the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), Armenia assumed the obligation to apply a number of customs duties, which are higher compared to the previously applied rates. In essence, the Deputy Minister continued, Russian customs duties will be applied. "As our customs duties increased, the WTO member countries appealed to Armenia with a proposal to hold additional negotiations to reduce the rates for a number of sensitive goods. Maybe a reduction in customs duties on certain goods that are of interest to these countries. We will prepare proposals and represent EEC. And this is a normal process; other participating countries also made similar proposals, "Babayan said, adding that Armenia has no legal obstacles to this process.
He recalled that over the next 5-7 years, customs duties in Armenia will increase by about 900 items. They should be gradually brought to the unified EAEU rates. For some products, they have already been raised, and in 2019 the process will continue. In the current year, the size of customs duties will be increased by almost 500 items of products.
