ArmInfo. Despite the high customs duties on supply of certain Armenian products to Iran, Armenia managed to increase exports to that country 2.9-fold in January 2016. Atom Margaryan, an expert, associate professor at the Armenian State Economic University, made such statement referring to the official statistics, at a news conference organized by the Club of Economic Journalists and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Company, on March 9.
"Opening of the Iranian market is a global factor and the cooperation with Armenia is promising," the expert said. In his words, Iran's protectionist model of economy should be exemplary for many countries. Despite sanctions, he said, Iran managed to develop and diversify its economy, including develop and introduce high technologies.
Margaryan said the cooperation with Iran should be considered as an alternative to the country's membership of the Eurasian Economic Union in the context of optimizing the trade and economic indicators. He believes that along with energy and industry, Armenia needs to launch cooperation with Iran in the field of pharmaceutics that is rapidly developing in the country.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the commodity turnover of Armenia and Iran in Jan-Dec 2015 totaled $276.3 million with a 5.8% year-on-year decline. In particular, export from Armenia to Iran fell 8.2% to $78 million, amid 3.9% decline of imports to $198.3 million. In Jan 2016, the foreign trade turnover between Armenia and Iran increased 30.3% to $16.5 million, with export growing 2.9-fold and import - 3.4%.
