ArmInfo.An Armenian delegation headed by Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Ashot Manukyan is participating in the 60th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the press office of the Ministry has told ArmInfo.
The head of the Armenian delegation stressed the important role of the IAEA in peaceful use of nuclear energy, and pointed at Armenia's long-term and efficient cooperation with the Agency. In particular, the minister pointed out the IAEA's active assistance in enhancing the safety of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant.
On the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference, the Armenian delegation held meetings with the delegations of Russia, European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), representatives of the IAEA Physical Protection Department, and other delegations. The meetings covered issues related to further cooperation, development of nuclear power engineering, ensuring of nuclear safety, etc.
To note, throughout the working week, representatives of 168 countries will be discussing the development perspectives of nuclear power engineering. This year IAEA Scientific Forum "Nuclear Technology for the Sustainable Development Goals" will be held on September 28-29. Highlighting the goals related to health, hunger, energy and the environment, the 2016 IAEA Scientific Forum will focus on how nuclear technology contributes to the SDGs. The Forum will be opened by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and will comprise five sessions over two days. Scientists and experts from around the world will showcase achievements in the selected thematic areas, discussing how nuclear technology can further contribute to the well-being of people, help protect the planet and boost prosperity. Set up in 1957 as the world's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field, the Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
