ArmInfo. As of December 19, the Upper Lars checkpoint is open for all kinds of traffic. 425 vehicles have already crossed the border, 185 moving to Armenia and 240 - to Russia. This was stated by Vahan Martirosyan, Armenian Transportation,Communications and IT Minister at the 2016 resulting conference in Yerevan on December 19.
As Martirosyan stated, 300 vehicles approached Armenian border not only from Upper Lars, but also from Poti port. According to Minister, Georgian partners do their best to keep this way open. But everybody understands that this winter is very cold, and it is impossible to secure the sustainable operation of the checkpoint despite works are being implemented in 24-7 regime. "We have both appropriate instructions of Georgian Prime Minister and we have the word given by our colleague," Martirosyan ensured.
To note, the Upper Lars, opened in early 90-ies of the last century, is the only land communication way between Armenia and Russia. The checkpoint is being closed time to time - because of the weather conditions. Armenian side has many times raised an issue of opening the Abkhazian sector of the railway, negotiating with Russian and Georgian parties, but did not succeed with that.
