ArmInfo. On June 28, at the international airport "Zvartnots" of Yerevan, an official start was given to the route Damascus-Yerevan-Damascus.
Earlier, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Armenia (GDCA) under the government of the country, the airline Sham Wings, gave permission for flights on the flight Damascus-Yerevan-Damascus. On the 21st of June, a flight along the route took place. The flights will be performed once a week on Wednesdays.
As is noted, the resumption of air communication between Armenia and Syria will significantly simplify communications between the two countries and give an additional impetus to the development of bilateral relations. In addition, the opening of a regular flight between Syria and Armenia caused a lot of positive feedback from the Syrian Armenian community. The Armenian community in Syria had about 110,000 people before the conflict in the country. Basically, the Syrian Armenians lived in Aleppo, Damascus, Latakia, Kesab and El-Kamishli. After the outbreak of the war, more than 90,000 Armenians left the country. According to the Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia, about 22 thousand refugees from Syria live in Armenia today.
