ArmInfo. September 15, 2017 in the Yerevan Center for Russian Science and Culture held a seminar on non-energy use of nuclear technology. The event was attended by experts, staff of universities and research institutes, journalists of national media, as well as representatives of youth organizations of Armenia. The event was organized by the Russian State Corporation Rosatom within the framework of the long-term and fruitful cooperation of Russia and Armenia in the field of nuclear energy.
Experts from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus who spoke with reports stressed that nuclear technologies today are not limited to the production of electricity and are increasingly used in medicine, agriculture and industry, improving the quality of life of a modern person. Atomic technologies are used in a variety of areas - from sterilization of medical equipment, desalination and water treatment, inspection complexes to space exploration, and many others. Ionizing irradiation is used to destroy insect pests, and to ensure long- term storage of agricultural products, and in nuclear medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases. A major role in the development and implementation of such technologies is played by the Russian corporation Rosatom."The sphere of application of nuclear and radiation technologies is inconceivably wide - sometimes they do not even have suitable competitors. The finest methods of researching materials were useful to physicists and chemists, metallurgists and electronics engineers, art historians and archaeologists. Physicians received unique methods of diagnosis and therapy of the most serious diseases, previously considered incurable. Due to radiation treatment, food is stored longer and has become more safe for human health. Today, the market for nuclear and radiation technologies is developing at an accelerated pace, and this is good for all of humanity, "said Andrei Akatov, a senior lecturer at the St. Petersburg State Technological Institute.
Associate Professor of the Department of Radiation Medicine and Ecology of the Belarusian State Medical University Aram Avetisov stressed that the nuclear medicine centers created by Rosatom make it possible to provide diagnostic and therapeutic assistance to patients with oncological diseases at the highest technological level. Modern methods of research - positron emission and computed tomography (PET / CT), as well as single-photon emission and computed tomography (SPECT / CT) allow to improve the quality of diagnostics and the effectiveness of treatment of cancer diseases. It is important that with the help of these technologies it became possible to detect ocancer diseases at earlier stages and, as a result, to reduce mortality, "he noted. Speaking about the use of atomic technologies in Armenia, the director of the National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Gevorg Vardanyan stressed that at the moment it is energy. The Armenian nuclear power plant provides the country with affordable electricity, which has a very positive impact on the development of the economy. However, the potential of using an atom for non- energy purposes is very great in Armenia, the experience of other countries in this direction is being actively studied, and potential partners are being searched for.
"Rosatom has unique competencies in the field of non-energetic application of peaceful atom, which are relevant for Armenia and are already being implemented in our country. First of all, these are technologies in the field of nuclear medicine and processing of agricultural products. I am confident that the emergence of multifunctional centers for processing food and medical products in our country with the help of irradiation technologies, the construction of which is being carried out by Rosatom, will have a positive impact on Armenia's economic development and improvement of healthcare, "Gevorg Vardanyan said. Deputy Director of Rosatom Eastern Europe Vladimir Gorn spoke about key projects of Rosatom where non-energy nuclear technologies are used.
The State Atomic Energy Corporation "Rosatom" unites about 400 enterprises and scientific institutions, including all civilian companies of the nuclear industry in Russia, research and development centers and the world's only nuclear fleet. "Rosatom" occupies a leading position in the world market of nuclear technologies. Currently, Rosatom is implementing projects to build 8 power units in Russia and 34 power units abroad. "Rosatom" is Armenia's partner in the modernization of Metsamor NPP and provides the station with nuclear fuel. The Russian Center of Science and Culture in Yerevan was opened on April 16, 2009. The main activities are the development of bilateral humanitarian cooperation in the field of culture, science and education; assistance to organizations of Russian compatriots, associations of graduates of Soviet and Russian universities, non-governmental organizations interested in developing cooperation with Russia in the field of public diplomacy; promotion of interregional and innovative cooperation; promotion of international development.
