Procedure of temporary registration of motor vehicles
ArmInfo. The Government of Armenia approved procedure of temporary registration of motor vehicles, Thursday.
Head of the Armenian Police Alik Sargsyan said at a briefing that the procedure was facilitated in connection with the Law On compulsory insurance of motor third party liability (MTL) that will come into effect on Jan 1 2011.
The procedure will allow insuring a car for a period of its exploitation and not for the year. In rural areas many vehicles are used within 2-3 months of harvest season and those vehicles can be insured for that period of time. This is a good opportunity for the owners to save funds, Alik Sargsyan said.
"The procedure of temporary registration will apply not only to villagers but to all the owners of motor vehicles," he said.
He explained that the owner of a vehicle can strike his vehicle off the list for the period when he does not use it and reregister it when necessary. The period of deregistration may last even 11 months and the owner can insure his vehicle for a month, Alik Sagrsyan said. The 5,000-drams state tax for deregistration and 5,000 drams for registration will be not charged.
However, Alik Sargsyan could not say how many vehicles have already undergone the procedure of MTL but all the 1700 police cars have already been insured.
Specialists say that there are nearly 300,000 vehicles in Armenia, including 260,000 cars, 15,000 buses, and 55,000 trucks. The average age of the car fleet was 12 years as of 2007. The MTL market in Armenia is estimated at $35 million (preliminary) based on 300,000 vehicles.
