Gallup: 63% of population are ready to keep savings in Armenian national currency
Arminfo. In Armenia 63% of population are ready to keep savings in Armenian national currency, the research center Gallup has published such data on the basis of the public opinion poll held in CIS countries in May-September 2010 among 1000 15 year old and elder respondents.
According to the poll, after the national dram Armenians most of all trust in the American dollar - 17%, EUR - 9% and Russian rouble - 1%. 1% of population keep their savings in several currencies.
The poll says that Azerbaijanis trust in their national currency most of all - 75%, and the Belarus least of all - 22% and prefer American dollar - 39%. The American currency is not popular in the Russian political scene as well as from the point of view of the "currency position". Here only 8% of respondents were ready to keep their savings in US dollar, while in Tajikistan - 51% and Uzbekistan - 41%.
As for EUR, 28% of respondents from Moldova are ready to keep their savings in EUR, 23% - from Georgia, 17% - from Ukraine and 12% from Russia. To note, according to the official statistics, 20% devaluation of the Armenian dram in March 2009 resulted in sharp exchange of the dram deposits in banks by the dollar ones from 30% up to 70%. During the last 18 months the dollarization situation has started gradually changing to better. To raise trust to the Armenian dram Armenian Central Bank took some important measures and commercial banks offered 2% more rate of interest for the dram deposits than for the foreign currency ones.
