Annual increase in sugar imports to Armenia by July 1, 2017 sharply  dropped from 82.3% to 9.4%

ArmInfo.In Q1 2017 in  Armenia 65.1 thousand tons of sugar were imported, with a slowdown in  the annual growth rate from 82.3% to 9.4%. According to the Customs  Service of the Republic of Armenia, in value terms, imports increased  by 60% (against 68% growth a year earlier) to $ 34.4 million.

According to the source, mainly sugar is imported to Armenia from  Brazil (82.2%) and Russia (17.4%), and in small quantities from  Spain, Italy, and Austria.

By way of comparison, we note that in 2016 Armenia imported 61.5  thousand tons of sugar, sharply slowing down the rate of decline from  38.5% to 0.2%. In terms of value, sugar imports declined by 8.3% to $  22.9 million in 2016, versus a 45.2% decline in 2015. In 2016,  Armenia suspended the export of sugar.

To note, 99.9% of sugar import to Armenia falls to share the company  Alex Grig, owned by the family of the Armenian oligarch, deputy of  the parliament Samvel Aleksanyan.
