State Committee for Urban Development reached an agreement on preservation of tower and small ring of old airport building

ArmInfo. It was possible to  reach an agreement on preserving the tower and small ring of the old  building of Zvartnots International Airport, Head of the State  Committee for Urban Development of Armenia Narek Sargsyan said at a  press conference on February 23.

Concerning the big ring, the head of the department noted that  according to the project its destruction is provided. "However,  discussions on this subject will be held. We will try to save this  object. I think we will be able to come to an agreement," he  stressed.

In particular, N. Sargsyan noted that the legislation of other  countries regulate the issues related to the preservation of  structures of public or architectural value, but not having the  status of monuments. In such cases, according to him, the community  takes care of the maintenance of such facilities. "However, in  Armenia such issues are not solved in this way," he stressed.

Within the framework of the agreement on the construction of a new  terminal at the Zvartnots airport, the International Airports Company  of Armenia initially promised to keep the building, changing its  functionality - creating an open economic zone, an entertainment  center, etc. However, in recent years, the company, referring to the  high costs of preserving the old building, offered to demolish it as  a morally and technically obsolete facility. The company faced a  stiff resistance to the general public in the country, including the  Union of Architects due to the fact that the building of the old  Zvartnots is a unique architectural heritage of the republic.
