ArmInfo. Iran has not quitted its intention to reanimate Urmia Lake at the expense of Armenia's water resources, Head of the Armenian Water Economy Committee Aram Harutyunyan told reporters, stressing that Armenia will not give its consent to it.
Harutyunyan said that Iran is interested in transporting water from Lake Sevan and other water resources of Armenia. "I can clearly say that there is no approved project at the moment. The Iranian side shows its interest, but no real steps are being taken to this end," he said.
He added that such projects can be launched only after serious debates.
To note, since 2012 the environmentalists have been concerned over the plans of transportation of water from the Sevan (Armenia) to the Urmia (Iran). In 2015, the Iranian media outlets reported Iran's plans to reanimate Lake Urmia at the expense of the water from Armenia and Georgia. Press TV reported, citing lawmaker Ali Alilu, that the water would be supplied from Lake Sevan and the Kura River via three stations. The MP said that the Sevan and the Kura are the sources that can give water to Lake Urmia. At the same time, a representative of the Committee for Restoration of Lake Urmia said that the plan has not been approved yet, because there are also objections.
