ArmInfo. The National Assembly of Armenia at the meeting on September 12 ratified the Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental agreement on the joint operation of the Meghri-Norduz customs gate.
According to Deputy Chairman of the Committee on State Revenues of the Republic Vakhtang Mirumyan, the agreement was signed on December 21, 2016 within the framework of the visit of Iranian President Hosan Rouhani to Armenia. The main goal of the document is to intensify trade and economic cooperation between Armenia and Iran. In this regard, it is envisaged to simplify customs procedures. It is planned, in particular, to exclude a dual control over the movement of vehicles, which will significantly speed up the travel time of cars. If the cargo is inspected on one side of the border, it will not be re-examined for another. In other words, the customs of the two countries will trust the certified customs declarations of their colleagues. Customs information on cargo and vehicles will be transmitted to the parties in electronic form. The control will be carried out by the host country. In exceptional cases, with the availability of operational information, the sending party can also monitor the control.
On August 3, the Iranian parliament has already ratified this agreement. 145 deputies of the Iranian parliament spoke for its application, with five against and abstentions. As indicated in the expert conclusion to the agreement, the customs gate of Meghri-Norduz is important for Iran not only from the point of view of ensuring bilateral trade turnover, but also for transit cargo transportation.
