Russia and Brazil became the main sugar import markets for Armenia in  2020

ArmInfo. In 2020, Armenia imported 73.9 thousand tons of sugar, which is 32.5% higher than a year ago (against a 32% decline in 2019).

As stated in the report of the RA Customs Service, in value terms, sugar imports increased by 36.5% - to $ 27.5 million.  In 2020, Russia and Brazil became the  main import sugar markets for Armenia - 43.6% and 41.3%,  respectively. During the reporting year, sugar was also supplied to  the Armenian market from Ukraine (13.4%) and Belarus (1.6%). The rest  of the volume came from Kyrgyzstan, France, Italy, the United  Kingdom, Colombia, Lebanon, Poland, Costa Rica.

At the same time, in 2020 Armenia increased sugar exports 2.5-fold-  up to 105.9 tons, and the Russian Federation was the main sales  market. The customs value of sugar increased almost the same -  2.3-fold, amounting to $ 78.1 thousand.

Note that the data of the Statistical Committee of the Republic of  Armenia for 2020 does not contain data on the volume of sugar  production, whereas a year earlier the Republic produced 59,981 tons  of raffinate sugar obtained from cane or beet sugar in solid form,  with an increase of 3.4% per year.  It should be noted that according  to previously available data, 99.9% of sugar imports to Armenia fall  on the share of the "Alex-Grig" company, which belongs to the family  of the Armenian oligarch Samvel Aleksanyan.
