
ArmInfo.A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Economy of Armenia and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran on May 24. The document, according to the press service of the RA Ministry of Economy, in particular, provides for the creation of a joint working group headed by the Deputy Minister of Economy, which will study the problems hindering trade and economic relations and make proposals for their elimination.
According to the source, during the meeting with the delegation headed by the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Eslami, Kerobyan noted that strong partnership relations have been established between Armenia and Iran in the economic field. According to him, the Armenian side is interested in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation and trade and economic relations with Iran, as well as in practical steps to implement the agreements.
Mohammad Eslami, in turn, confirmed the readiness of the Iranian side to implement initiatives to deepen economic relations, and expressed confidence that the great potential of cooperation between the two countries can be realized by involving the Armenian-Iranian companies in joint programs.
During the meeting, a wide range of issues of mutual interest were discussed, including attracting investments, building an industrial settlement with the participation of the Iranian side, improving logistics infrastructure, simplifying and regulating procedures in the process of transporting goods, as well as tariffs for the transit of Iranian goods through Armenia.
The parties touched upon the issue of opening new flights between Armenia and Iran, which may become an additional impetus for the activation of the tourism sector.
It should be noted that according to the data of the Statistical Committee of Armenia, the foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Armenia with Iran in the first quarter of 2021 recorded an increase of 36.8% and amounted to approximately USD 103 million. At the same time, Armenian exports decreased by 17.7%, while imports increased by 55.6%.
