ArmInfo.Cargo transportation in Armenia in January-August 2021 increased by 12.1% per annum (against 4.5% growth in the same period in 2020), amounting to 10,467.1 thousand tons. According to the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, the acceleration of the upward dynamics was provoked by the change from the recession to the growth of cargo transportation by air and the acceleration of the upward pace of road freight transportation.
Of the total volume, the lion's share is accounted for by road transport - 68.5% or 7,171.4 thousand tons, with an acceleration in y-o-y growth from 2.7% to 21.7%. At the same time, railway cargo transportation worsened the y-o-y dynamics from 11.4% growth to 9.9% decline, amounting to 2011.3 thousand tons in January-August this year. Air cargo transportation, on the contrary, on a y-o-y terms changed from a 17.4% decline to 4% growth, amounting to 10.4 thousand tons for 8 months of 2021. The main pipeline supplied 1,274 thousand tons of natural gas, with an acceleration in y-o-y growth from 2% to 5.7%.
According to the source, in January-August 2021, passenger traffic increased by 33.7% per annum (against a 59.7% decline last year), amounting to 68,213.1 thousand people. In particular, rail passenger traffic increased by 38.3% to 277.6 thousand people, air - 2.1-fold to 1 423.7 thousand people, road - by 25.5% to 52 342.1 thousand people. Passenger transportation by electric transport increased by 68.2% - up to 14,169.7 thousand people. A year earlier, in January-August 2020, passenger transportation by these types of transport was in decline: rail - by 31.2%, air - by 71.8%, automobile - by 61.3%, electric transport - by 47.5%. As a result, freight turnover accelerated the y-o-y growth from 0.3% to 6%, amounting to 3,222.7 million ton-km in January-August 2021, and passenger traffic turned the trend from last year's 63.5% decline towards 55.3% - growth, amounting to 1,016.3 million passengers for 8 months of this year.
