Armenia increased sugar imports by 1.2% in 2021, while exports grew  by 77.3%

ArmInfo.In 2021, Armenia increased sugar imports by 1.2% to 74.7 thousand tons (against an increase of 32.5% in 2020). As noted in the report of the Customs  Service of the Republic of Armenia, in value terms, sugar imports  increased by 55.4% - up to $42.8 million.

In 2021, the main sugar import markets for Armenia were: Brazil  (52.6%), Russia (36%), and to a lesser extent Ukraine (5.3%), Morocco  (3.9%), Belarus and Germany (0.8% each). Sugar was also imported  from:  France, Italy, Colombia, United Kingdom, Colombia, Belgium,  Bulgaria, Peru, Guatemala, Greece, Hungary, Mexico, Poland, the  Netherlands.

At the same time, during the reporting period, Armenia increased the  export of sugar by 77.3% - up to 194.1 tons. The customs value of  exported sugar increased by 86.7%, amounting to $145.8 thousand.  The  main sales market was the Russian Federation (91.4%), as well as  Georgia (7%), the USA (1.4%) and Kazakhstan (0.2%).

It should be noted that the RA Statistical Committee does not provide  any data on the volumes of sugar production in 2021, as an year  earlier. In 2019, the Republic produced 59,981 thousand tons of  refined sugar obtained from cane or beet sugar in solid form, with an  increase of 3.4% over the year.  It should be reminded that according  to earlier data, 99.9% of sugar imports to Armenia fall on the shares  of "Alex-Grig" company belonging to the family of Armenian oligarch  Samvel Aleksanyan.
