ArmInfo. At the expected 17th meeting of the Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental commission, which will be held in Yerevan, Armenia and Iran will sign a long-term memorandum, which will provide an opportunity to identify and develop areas of cooperation, including in the field of the environment.
This was stated by the Minister of Environment of Armenia Hakob Simidyan during a meeting with Minister of Energy of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali-Akbar Mehrabian.
He also noted that the Armenian-Iranian relations are developing at a high level in a number of areas, in particular, in trade, energy, transport, agriculture and road construction.
According to the press service of the Ministry of the Environment, during the meeting the parties discussed issues of mutual interest in the field of the environment, in particular, those related to the water sector, specially protected natural areas, biodiversity, and ecotourism.
Touching upon the topic of the construction of reservoirs, the Armenian side expressed its readiness to cooperate with the Iranian side in the design of reservoirs and other programs in the water sector.
Minister Simidyan expressed hope that the governments of the two countries will show the necessary political will and consistency for the development of interstate relations in different directions. At the same time, he noted that the visit of Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabian should become an incentive to expand the environmental agenda. It is reported that the interlocutors confirmed their readiness to implement joint programs in the field of environmental protection and sustainable management.
Semidyan and Mehrabian highly appreciated the effectiveness of the joint work and the successes achieved in recent months on the border river Araks. In this regard, the parties came to an agreement, under the leadership of the Deputy Minister in charge of the water sector and the relevant specialist in water management from the Iranian side, to intensify ongoing work to achieve more significant results.
