ArmInfo. Heavy repair of the road running to the Armenian- Georgian border has got under way in Armenia, the Road Department Fund reports.
The Ashots-Bavra section of the Yerevan-Gyumri-Georgian border road is being modernized. At present, the contractor, AAB Project Ltd, has completed asphalt milling in an area of 3sq. km. The government is funding the repair work.
This April, Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Gnel Sanosyan announced postponement of the repair of this road. "This section is not in the best condition, but if it is repaired now, then in one or two years it will have to be rebuilt again for the North-South highway. Then the road, repaired to current standards, in two lanes, will have to be rebuilt into four lanes, possibly with a concrete pavement. Therefore, first, as part of the North-South project, we want to build a bypass road around Gyumri in order to relieve traffic in the city, and then we will think about continuing to the border with Georgia," Mr Sanosyan said.
