Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Hungary have been frozen  since 2012, after the then leadership of the country returned Ramil  Safarov to Azerbaijan as a national "hero", who hacked to death with  an ax the Armenian officer Gurgen Markaryan, who was taking military  courses in Hungary.

10 years later, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, within the  framework of the 29th OSCE ministerial meeting, met with his  Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto, with whom an agreement was  reached to restore full diplomatic relations. The parties expressed  their intention to open a new chapter in Armenian-Hungarian relations  based on mutual trust and respect for international law.

In May 2023, Armenia appointed Ashot Smbatyan as a non-resident  ambassador to Hungary. And just recently, Hungary announced its  intention to open its consulate in Armenia.
