ArmInfo.At its meeting on February 29, the Government of Armenia approved the proposal to sign a grant agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the Asian Development Bank "Program for increasing food security adapted to climate change".
According to the document's explanation, the $3 million grant offered by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia-Pacific (JFPR) will support the Armenian government in increasing agricultural resilience and improving food security in rural areas highly vulnerable to climate impacts. The Climate-Adaptive Food Security Enhancement Project (CAFSEP) will focus on two regions of RA, Shirak and Tavush, where smallholder farmers face high levels of poverty, food insecurity and climate risks.
The grant will be provided to ten villages for climate resilient energy solutions to reduce energy costs and savings that will be reinvested in community support for sustainable agriculture; to improve living standards in rural communities through climate-resilient agriculture and local income generation projects; to strengthen the institutional capacity of the RA Ministry of Economy to support climate change adaptation planning and develop environmentally friendly investment programs in the agricultural sector.
A potential beneficiary of the program have to meet at least one of a number of criteria, those with one breadwinner, where the owner of the farm is a woman, with 4 or more children under the age of 18 and with persons with disabilities in their care.
