Expert: Stimulating employment is critical in fight against poverty  in Armenia

ArmInfo. In the fight against poverty in Armenia, stimulating employment is critical. This was  stated by World Bank senior specialist Lea Hakim, presenting the report:  Beyond Boundaries: Unlocking Potential for a Sustainable Future.

Noting that the poverty level in Armenia is 24.8 percent, she  emphasized the importance of opening quality jobs and developing  human capital.

The expert noted that labor productivity in Armenia is low, which  continues to hamper the country's development. Regarding the  educational sector, Lea Hakim noted that there is no progress. In  this regard, she cited the latest indicators on the effectiveness of  education received in Armenian schools. In particular, the WB  representative noted that 11 years spent in Armenian schools is equal  to 8 years in terms of the level of knowledge acquired. This  indicator was recorded in 2019, and it is inferior to similar  indicators in the countries of Europe and Central Asia.

In this context, she noted the need to improve the quality of  education and the relevance of programs to the general education  sector. "We researched and saw that in 2010, the income level from  schooling was 6.3%, and in 2021 it dropped to 2%, which indicates the  inadequacy of educational programs," she said.  According to  statistical data, the unemployment rate in Armenia decreased to 12.6%  in 2023 from 13% in 2022. During the reporting period, the number of  employed people amounted to 1,177.1 million people.  (with a y-o-y  growth of 3.1%), and the unemployed numbered 177.4 thousand people,  with an increase of 7% over the year.
