ArmInfo.Armenia was elected a Member of the Economic and Social Council for the years 2025-2027 in the vote held at the UN General Assembly in New York on June 7. According to the press service of the Foreign Ministry, three countries were nominated for two vacant seats - Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Azerbaijan.
148 votes were cast in favor of Armenia's candidacy by secret ballot. The passing score is 125 votes.
As part of its membership in the UN Economic and Social Council, Armenia will make efforts to fulfill its commitments and priorities, namely: implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, developing human capital, strengthening the economic opportunities of women and youth, promoting the priorities of landlocked and middle-income developing countries, and combating climate change.
According to the source, the Economic and Social Council, headquartered in New York, is one of the main organs of the United Nations. It consists of 54 UN member states and deals with the promotion of economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development. The Council also plays an important role in strengthening international cooperation for development.
