Further growth in USD transactions in Armenia`s interbank foreign exchange market Aug 12 to 16

ArmInfo. August 12 to 16, 2024, USD transactions showed an accelerating growth, with EUR and RUB transactions showing a downward trend in Armenia's interbank foreign exchange market. Four USD and four RUB transactions were effected during the period under review, with only one EUR transaction effected.

USD transactions showed a 68.2% growth against a 22,2% growth, with EUR transactions showing a 30% decline against a 2-fold growth, with RUB transactions showing a 32.4% decline against a 89% growth.

As a result, the total amount of USD transactions exceeded the total amount of RUB transactions 3-fold (against a 1.1-fold excess the previous week), whereas USD transactions exceeded EUR transactions 24- fold (against 10-fold the previous week). The total amount of RUB transactions exceeded that of  EUR transactions 8.3-fold (against 9-fold the previous week). 

During the period under review against the previous period (August 5-9, 2024), in the intrabank foreign exchange market, USD purchases showed a growth against a decline, with USD sales showing an accelerating decline, EUR purchases showed a decline, with a growth, with EUR sales showing an accelerating decline. RUB purchases showed an accelerating decline, with RUB sales showing an accelerating growth. 

August 12 to 16 2024, saw AMD appreciation against the USD - AMD 389.3/$1 to AMD 388.8/$1, and against the RUB - AMD 4.4/RUB 1 to AMD 4.3/RUB 1, with AMD depreciation against the EUR - AMD 424/EUR 1 to AMD 426/EUR 1.

On August 16, 2023, the AMD/USD exchange rate was AMD 385.8/$1, AMD/EUR exchange rate, AMD 422/EUR 1 and AMD/RUB exchange rate, AMD 4/RUB 1, which is evidence of y/y AMD depreciation against the USD, EUR and RUB.

For the period under review, the CBA reports four USD transactions (except for August 16), four RUB transactions effected (except for August 15) and one EUR transaction (on August 14). In fact, transactions were effected on the interbank foreign exchange market every day. As a result, $18.5mln transactions were effected at an average exchange rate of AMD 388.73/$1 (against AMD 38878/$1 the previous week), RUB 575mln transactions, at an average exchange rate of AMD 4.29/RUB 1 (against AMD 4.52/RUB 1 the previous week), with the only EUR transaction, EUR 700,000, effected at an average exchange rate of AMD 426.5/EUR 1 (against AMD 423/EUR 1).  The period under review saw the largest volume of USD transactions was recorded on August 14 - $6.5mln, with the largest volume of RUB transactions effected on August 12 - RUB 200mln.

August 12 to 16, 2024 against the period under review (August 5 to 9, 2024), in Armenia's intrabank foreign exchange market, USD purchases showed a 15% growth against a 9% decline, with USD sales showing a 29.4% decline against a 0.3% decline. EUR purchases showed a 6% decline against a 12.1% growth, with EUR sales showing a 36.5% decline against a 10.7% decline. RUB purchases showed a 39.7% decline against a 9.4% decline, and RUB sales showed a 19% decline against an 11% decline.

During the period under review, USD purchases totaled $134.1 mln at an average exchange rate of AMD 386.7/$1, EUR 33.3mln at an average exchange rate of AMD 421.13/EUR 1, and RUB 11.5bln at an average exchange rate of AMD 4.28/RUB 1. USD sales totaled $177.7 mln at an average exchange rate of AMD 389.84/$1, EUR sales totaled 49.5mln at an average exchange rate of AMD 428.97/EUR 1, and RUB sales RUB 4.4bln at an average exchange rate of AMD 4.43/RUB 1. The largest USD purchases and sales were reported on August 12 ($36.5mln and $48.8mln respectively). The largest EUR purchases and sales were recorded on August 12 (EUR 8.8mln and EUR 13.6mln respectively). The largest RUB purchases ere recorded on August 14 (over RUB 2.2bln) with the largest RUB sales recorded on August 13 (RUB 1.9bln).

In the first half of 2024, the CBA made $256.5mln interventions in Armenia's foreign exchange market only in April-June, with only purchase transactions effected ($20mln in April, $136.5mln in May, $100mln in June). The AMD/USD exchange rate was AMD 388.87/$1 this May against AMD 386.60/$1 last September, when purchase translations were last effected, with greater depreciation against December 2022 (AMD 393.50/$1).

In the first half of 2024,, in the intrabank foreign exchange market, purchases totaled $3.02 bln, EUR 741.5mln and RUB 450.6 bln, and sales totaled $4.9 bln, exceeded EUR 1.95bln and RUB 155.9blm, which formed the following buying rates in June 2024: the AMD 386.27/$1, AMD 414.07/EUR 1 and AMD 4.37/RUB 1 against AMD 402.72/$1, and AMD 437.90/EUR 1 and RUB 4.43/1 RUB in December 2023.  The selling rates were as follow: AMD 389.58/$1, AMD, 421.33/EUR 1, and AMD 4.4/RUB 1 against AMD 406.14/$1, AMD 445.57/EUR 1 and AMD 4.5/RUB 1 in December 2023.

In the first half of 2024, on the interbank foreign exchange market, $356.6 mln, EUR 21.6mln (with no EUR transactions effected this June) and RUB 15.7bln transactions were effected, which was accompanied by AMD appreciation against the RUB to AMD 4.4/RUB 1 and against the USD, AMD 388.57/$1 this June, with the AMD/EUR exchange rate being AMD 420.2/EUR 1 this May (with no EUR transactions effected in June) against AMD 4.47/RUB 1, AMD 405.62/$1 and EUR 444.30/EUR 1 respectively in December 2023.The largest volume of RUB transactions, RUB 4.5bln, was recorded this June, with the largest volume of USD and EUR transactions was recorded this January ($92.7mln and EUR 11.7mln).

RUB transactions on the foreign exchange interbank of Armenia started on March 14, 2022, with RUB 8.8bln transactions effected until the end of that year, with RUB 17.5bln transactions effected in 2023. This was accompanied by AMD depreciation against the RUB in March-December 2022 - AMF 4.86 to AMD 5.8/RUB 1, with AMD appreciation against the RUB to AMD 4.47/RUB 1 by the end of 2023. The foreign exchange stock market has remained idle for the eight year.
