ArmInfo. Economic activity in Armenia has increased by 7.1% in January 2025 compared to January 2024 (down from 10.7% growth the previous year), with growth in all areas except the industrial sector.
In January alone, economic activity decreased by 45.3% (against a 45.1% decline in January 2024), with the decline recorded in all areas. Foreign trade also experienced a decline both in January and year-on-year. This is evidenced by final data from the RA Statistical Committee.
According to the statistics, the most significant annual growth in economic activity in January 2025 was in the services sector, the construction sector and the energy complex, with increase of 12.6%, 11.6% and 10.1%, respectively. Slightly lower growth was seen in the trade sector at 9.9%, and the industrial sector experienced a decline by 10.4%. For comparison, in January 2024, an annual decline was recorded only in the energy complex (6.3%), and other sectors showed growth: the industrial sector - 21%, the trade sector - 19.3%, the services sector - 4.4%, and the construction sector - 9.5%.
In January 2025,, the trade sector led with a volume of 379.2 billion drams ($ 953 million). The service sector followed with - 280 billion drams ($703.8 million), the industrial sector as third with 190.6 billion drams ($478.9 million), and the construction sector took fourth place with a volume of 19.3 billion drams ($48.4 million), due to the lack of data from the agricultural sector, which traditionally occupies this position, Electricity generation in January 2025 amounted to 918.6 million kWh. At the same time, the annual dynamics of Armenia's foreign trade worsened in January, showing a significant decline compared to the growth seen a year ago. Foreign trade turnover in January 2025 was 548.1 billion drams ($1.4 billion), with a reversal of the annual dynamics from 78.8% growth towards a 40% decline.
This resulted from a deterioration in the trend of both imports, which went from 61.4% growth to a 33.5% decline, and exports - from 2.1-fold growth to a 49.2% decline. The absolute value of exports in January, 2025 amounted to 192 billion drams ($482.2 million) and imports to 356.1 billion drams ($895.1 million). In January 2025 alone, foreign trade turnover decreased by 27.1% due to a 20.9% decline in imports and a 36.3% decline in exports, compared to last year's January decline of 24.1%, 11.2% and 36.1%, respectively. The average exchange rate of the dram against the US dollar was AMD 397.89/$1 in January 2025, compared to AMD 404.96/$1 in January 2024.
