ArmInfo. Many in Armenia believe that the IT sector is in excellent condition, and there is no cause or councern, but this is far from true. This opinion was shared by co- founder and director of Layerswap Aram Kocharyan, during a conversation with an ArmInfo correspondent at Tech Week Vanadzor-2025.
He noted that based on the available indicators, the sector has been stagnant or even declining for a long time. However, such a trend, according to the expert, is not unique to Armenia, but is also seen in the global IT market. This is primarily due to an 80% decrease in hiring, which can also be attributed to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a decrease in investments in the industry.
"And we need new blood, new startups. It is necessary to involve new people, but what is crucial is to do it in a new format," he shared. Discussing the reasons for the current situation in the information technology sector in Armenia, Kocharyan mentioned that, as a rule, startups that have established themselves in the market and have gained enough knowledge, experience, and connections should help in the creation of new startups, as was the case, for example, with Picsart. "Perhaps we are now in a stage where we are waiting for the growth of startups already in the market," he said, noting that very few new startups are being created now, as it is a more challenging path than when startups emerge from existing ones.
Note that according to the Statistical Committee, in the first quarter of 2025, the information technology (IT) sector in Armenia grew by 24.5% year-on-year, reaching a volume of 142.2 billion drams. The exchange rate of the dram in January-March 2025 was AMD 395.42/$1.
