ArmInfo. Pakistan intends to recognize Armenia as a UN member state, for which it will receive the green light to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This was reported by TASS sources.
"Pakistan really plans to do this, and as a reciprocal step - to obtain consensus on the issue of joining the EAEU," one of the agency's interlocutors in the UN said.
Another diplomatic source noted that the relevant procedures could take from several weeks to several months. "In any case, this is a foreseeable prospect," the interlocutor added. He also emphasized that the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan left no obstacles in this matter.
The day before, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the Russian side welcomes the resumption of contacts between Armenia and Pakistan, calling it "a step forward."
On August 31, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China. Following the talks, the two foreign ministers signed a communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Since Armenia declared independence, it has not had diplomatic relations with Pakistan due to Islamabad's position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Moreover, for many years, Pakistan has been described as a threat to national security in Armenia's national security doctrine.
