Florida is building a highway that will charge electric vehicles on the move

ArmInfo. In Florida, construction is well underway on State Road 516, which will feature a 1.2-kilometer section for on-the-move contactless charging for electric vehicles.

The project, costing $540 million, will not only connect rapidly growing regions of the state but also serve as a testbed for a dynamic charging system. Induction coils will be installed under the concrete surface in a dedicated section, generating a magnetic field with a power output of 200 kW, comparable to modern chargers.

However, not every electric vehicle will be able to take advantage of the charging capabilities, as most models sold in the US lack the necessary equipment. This project is experimental in nature and provides an opportunity to test on-the-move charging technology.

The primary users of the electrified highway will not be private electric vehicles, but commercial vehicles such as trucks, delivery vans, and company cars. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2029.
