ArmInfo. The annual International Competition Network's (ICN) workshop opened in Yerevan, bringing together representatives of antitrust authorities and experts from 32 countries.
In 2024, ICN announced a competition for the right to host the workshop, and the winning application was from the Republic of Armenia, submitted by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
"This marks the first time that Armenia's relevant agency has been given the opportunity to host such an event in our country. Furthermore, in just two days, we will be hosting an event of the OECD Regional Centre for Competition in Budapest. "This is important, first and foremost, because we demonstrate our capacity and potential for hosting such events and send a signal to our international partners about Armenia's progressive development," Gegham Gevorgyan, Chairman of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, stated.
The head of the Commission delivered a report at the event "The Importance of Protecting Competition Interests in a Modern, Rapidly Changing Economy."
Armenian Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan delivered a welcoming speech during the seminar. He emphasized that competition is one of the key conditions for sustainable economic development, and that competitiveness enhancement policies are outlined in the Armenian government's Doctrine of Economic and Institutional Reforms.
According to the Minister, an effective competitive environment promotes economic diversification, stimulates innovation, enhances investment attractiveness, and ensures more effective consumer protection. "Therefore, the development of competition policy and its effective application play a crucial role in the formation and implementation of economic policy," Papoyan emphasized.
It is worth noting that the International Competition Network is designed to facilitate cooperation between antitrust authorities worldwide. The Armenian agency has been a member of the organization since 2001 and participates in the work of its three working groups.
