ArmInfo.Reservoir safety, legislative reforms, and the efficient use of water resources were on the agenda of the regular meeting of the standing technical committee on the use and protection of water systems, organized by the Water Resources Committee of Armenia.
As reported by the Water Committee's press service on its Facebook page, the meeting also focused on the safety of hydraulic structures, improving water legislation, and increasing the efficiency of water resource use.
It is noted that the meeting participants discussed the implementation of requirements for the development of safety declarations and expert assessment procedures for hydraulic structures, as stipulated by Armenian Government Resolution No. 957-N of September 4, 2003. The need to revise and tighten the requirements for declarations regarding the safe operation of facilities was also emphasized. The commission also reviewed proposals for amendments and additions to the Water Code of Armenia. It was noted that the current code contains a number of legislative gaps that hinder the effective management of one sector, and that legislative reform is needed.
The possibilities of introducing more efficient irrigation technologies in agriculture, the rational use of water resources, and the assessment of the actual capacity of reservoirs were also discussed. Following the meeting, priority issues were identified that will be discussed at the commission's next meeting.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman Narek Vardanyan, Mher Nalbandyan, Head of the Water Supply and Irrigation Services Improvement Program (WISE), and Colonel Mher Babajanyan, an invited representative of the Rescue Services of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
