He noted that Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom state corporation, will visit Armenia in September to discuss the possibility of constructing a new nuclear power plant. The head of the state corporation, as the head of government emphasized, will present the proposals that Russia can make to Armenia regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant. "I have said before that the issue of constructing a nuclear power plant is not a matter of geopolitical choice for us; we need the best price-quality ratio. We will go with whoever makes us the best offer," Nikol Pashinyan said.
It is worth noting that last year, Rosatom presented to the Armenian side a 14-volume project for the construction of a 1200 MW unit. However, official Yerevan made a conceptual decision to build a nuclear power plant with a small modular reactor. However, Moscow, based on its existing experience, is ready to offer this model as well. Russia, the United States and other countries, including China, are discussing projects for the construction of small modular reactors with Armenia. Against the backdrop of US proposals, other players are also showing interest in cooperation, in particular, China, offering its technological solutions. Contacts with Russia's Rosatom are also ongoing. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan previously stated that small modular reactor technologies are promising, but emphasized the importance of economic feasibility, the final cost of electricity for consumers in decades, and the return on investment.
