ArmInfo. Narek Apitonyan, Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, today received Alexander Ferenc Timan, Head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission to Armenia, and Natalia Novtova, IMF Resident Representative in Armenia.
During the meeting, the parties discussed issues of energy sector development, increasing the flexibility and resilience of the energy system, the introduction of energy storage systems, and climate resilience.
The interlocutors also touched upon the work being carried out in the energy sector, the possibilities for developing renewable energy, and future directions for the industry's development.
In addition, issues related to the energy sector, as part of IMF studies, were among the topics discussed.
It should be noted that, according to the Statistics Committee, over the past seven months In 2026, Armenia generated 6,077.9 million kWh of electricity, up 9.4% from the previous year.
In particular, in January-July, thermal power plants (TPPs) provided the year-on-year growth of 43.8% to 2,466.5 million kWh, and hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) grew by 7.1% to 1,619 million kWh. Meanwhile, the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) reduced its output by 33.1% year-on-year to 939.5 million kWh.
Solar power plants provided annual growth of 13.2% to 1,052.3 million kWh, while wind power plants grew by 36.8% to 0.6 million kWh.
As a reminder, the IMF, when updating its forecast in June, did not change its expectations for Armenia's GDP growth, predicting a slowdown in 2026 to 5.3% with a slight acceleration in 2027 to 5.5%.
