Armenia will modernize existing standards in various sectors of the economy, develop national standards in line with international and regional standards, participate in international and regional standardization processes, and modernize the national standards fund and provide information services. At its meeting on September 24, the RA Government approved the draft Cabinet resolution "On Approving the State Standardization Program and the List of Standardization Works for 2026."
As RA Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan noted in his speech, the need for standardization work stems from the requirements of the Law "On Standardization" and the "Development of the Standards and Accreditation System" program. Noting the importance of the document, Papoyan noted that standards apply not only to the economy, but also to other areas. In accordance with Articles 2, 9, and 19 of the Law "On Standardization," the annual state standardization program is developed based on proposals from government agencies, approved by government decree, and is subject to state funding.
State support for standardization includes work on the development and revision of national standards, work within the European and Eurasian Economic Unions, and the maintenance and information support of the national standards fund.
The State Standardization Program until 2026 provides for the development of national standards in accordance with international standards in the areas of management systems, environmental protection, and geospatial data, as well as international and interstate standardization work and the maintenance and information support of the national standards fund. Specifically, in the area of management systems, it is planned to develop requirements for bodies auditing and certifying food safety management systems, as well as national standards related to the assessment and certification of products, processes, and services, in accordance with the international standards ISO 22003-1 and ISO 22003-2.
In the area of environmental protection, it is planned to develop a national standard defining a method for determining perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water in accordance with ISO 21675. The development of this standard is also important, given that the study of these substances included in the list of indicators subject to mandatory research in the new sanitary norms and rules for drinking water, which will come into force on January 1, 2027.
In the field of geospatial data, it is planned to develop national standards regarding geographic information on temporal schemes, mapping methodology, and coding of spatial objects in accordance with the international standards ISO 19108, ISO 19110, and ISO 19118, respectively. Their development will contribute to the formation of the necessary regulatory framework for the development of the spatial data sector in the Republic of Armenia and to ensuring the provisions established by the RA Government Decree of November 6, 2025.
At the same time, it is planned to continue the participation of the Republic of Armenia in international, European, and Eurasian standardization processes, conduct expert evaluations and electronic voting on draft international and interstate standards, and organize cooperation with relevant international and regional standardization bodies.
Regarding the National Standards Fund, work is planned to replenish, register, maintain, and modernize it, register adopted national standards, create and maintain an electronic database of the full texts of current standards, and provide information services to government agencies, organizations, and other interested parties in the Republic.
