Likhachev: Rosatom is receiving positive signals from Armenia regarding its proposal for a new nuclear power plant unit.

ArmInfo. Rosatom is receiving positive signals from Armenia regarding its proposal to build a new power unit there. This was stated by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, according to TASS.

According to him, the results of the meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are generating "a large positive public response." "And all the contacts we maintain today signal an extremely positive reception to our proposal for the construction of a VVER-1000 gigawatt-class unit as quickly as possible, with every possible support and optimization of this project," Likhachev said.

As a reminder, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan previously stated that there are opportunities to extend the service life of Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant for another 10 years beyond 2036, and, if necessary, until 2046. A decision on the new plant must be made within this timeframe. Nuclear reactor models proposed by Russia, the United States, France, China, and South Korea are being studied. He emphasized the importance of conducting research into the international nuclear technology market and choosing the right new plant.

It should be noted that the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) underwent scheduled maintenance from May to September of this year. During this period, the main work on the second life extension program for Unit 2 of the ANPP was completed. $165 million in savings from the first life extension program was allocated to this task. At the beginning of the year, the country's authorities announced a conceptual decision to build a NPP with small modular reactors, but as early as October of this year, Pashinyan did not rule out the possibility of building a conventional NPP.
