ArmInfo. It is theoretically possible to create an atomic bomb in Armenia, but it is difficult to say how much this is possible in practice. Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures of the Republic of Armenia Hakob Vardanyan said this at a meeting of the Commission on Eurasian and Regional Integration on January 12, answering the question of the chairman of the commission Mikael Melkumyan.
According to the Deputy Minister, the fuel used at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is stored in a dry waste storage of nuclear fuel. "Theoretically, yes, it is possible to create a bomb, but from a technological point of view, I do not presume to speak, because I am not an expert in this area," the deputy minister said, adding that the main raw material for the production of a bomb is plutonium, which is formed from the decay of uranium. "However, what cycles will be required for this, and how technologically possible, I cannot say. For this, appropriate infrastructures and prepared companies are needed," Hakob Vardanyan stressed.
Let us remind that former Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan has repeatedly spoken about the presence of nuclear weapons in Armenia. Three years ago, on the sidelines of an economic forum in Krynica, Poland, he argued that Armenia has had nuclear weapons since the 70s of the last century. However, the Armenian authorities have also repeatedly denied these allegations.
