ArmInfo. Government of Armenia approved agreement of air communication between Armenia and Belgium on August 18. Minister of economy Artsvik Minasyan says the agreement was signed yet in 2001, but then Armenia lacked "open sky" policy, which implied tangible restrictions in the field. With the new policy, the agreement will boost the Arenian-Belgian cooperation in the field of air transportation, tourism development and commodity turnover.
To recall, On 23 October 2013, the Armenian Government approved a program ensuring provision of competitive air services in Armenia. The program is based on the joint survey of McKinsey & Company and the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia. To note, the "open sky" policy that was announced in the country in 2013 after Armavia, the national air carrier of Armenia, suspended its flights on 1 April 2013 and launched the bankruptcy procedure. Earlier in 2003, the same happened to Armenian Airlines. This sparked a large-scale exodus of foreign companies from the Armenian market. Consequently, due to the high prices of air tickets, many Armenian passengers prefer to make use of the services of neighboring Georgia, where there are several low-cost European companies.
