Armenia looks for a loophole to decommission problematic HPPs
ArmInfo. The Armenian Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources suggests setting up a special Fund to decommission the problematic hydropower plants, Deputy Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources Hayk Harutyunyan said on November 23.
He noted that based on an integrated analysis, the Ministry of Energy will submit its approaches to the hydropower engineering development concept for consideration of the Government. At the same time, the Ministry urges the supervisory bodies to toughen the control over this area.
Harutyunyan stressed that there should be no HPPs in the protected areas and on the rivers flowing into Lake Sevan. However, decommissioning of these HPPs needs legislative bases and relevant work is currently being done to that end.
