ArmInfo. Ineffective use of land and water resources, as well as existing infrastructures, is noted in Armenia, according to the Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Karapetyan at a meeting of the Armenian Government on August 24.
According to the Prime Minister, according to the land report, the irrigated land areas of Armenia make up about 208 thousand hectares. However, as the head of the government noted, in fact in recent years the area of irrigated areas has fluctuated around 90-130 thousand hectares. "It follows from the analysis made that this difference is largely due to inefficient use of land and water resources, as well as existing infrastructures, which is not permissible under the adopted program for the development of agriculture," Karen Karapetyan said.
In this regard, the Prime Minister instructed the ministers of territorial administration and development David Lokyan, the nature protection Artsvik Minasyan, the agriculture Ignatiy Arakelyan and the regional governors to provide the State Water Committee with materials, data and information necessary to increase the irrigated territories within a month. The head of the water industry of Armenia, Arsen Harutyunyan, was instructed to take measures in two months after receiving this information, in co-operation with interested parties, to increase the efficiency of irrigation systems operation, and to submit proposals to the government apparatus in the direction of increasing the areas of irrigated lands, specifying the terms of implementation.
