ArmInfo. In order to ensure biosafety in the application of GMOs, a working group was established in Armenia, which included responsible persons from the RA Ministry of Agriculture, RA Nature Protection, RA public health, as well as leaders of public organizations and scientists. Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia Ignaty Arakelyan stated this during the meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USA to Armenia Richard Mills.
According to the press service of the ministry, the minister noted that as a result of discussions of the working group, an agreement was reached to implement legislative regulations on the precautionary principle, since the safety of GMOs has not been proven to date. He also said that in the near future it will be reviewed, or amendments will be made to the RA law "On biosafety of the use of GMOs"
R. Mills once again confirmed the readiness of the US to provide assistance in the development of agriculture and to send relevant specialists for the exchange of experience. "We attach special importance to the long-term cooperation with the RA Ministry of Agriculture, since for us the agro-sector is a priority in view of the high growth potential of this sector. The embassy will continue to support the Ministry in the issue of regulation and control of the sphere of agriculture," he stressed.
According to the source, during the meeting the parties discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation and a number of other priority issues, in particular those related to the use of GMOs and biotechnologies, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety and high quality of food.
