ArmInfo. The continuation of nuclear energy generation in Armenia after 2026 depends on the political will and the correct calculation by our authorities of the current situation and, above all, prospects. A similar opinion was expressed to ArmInfo by UN expert on energy issues Ara Marjanyan.
To recall, recently Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan announced that Yerevan is already conducting negotiations with Moscow on the construction of a new power unit of the Armenian NPP in Metsamor. Talks about the construction of the new power unit of the ANPP have been held with no results for the latest two decades, even the amount needed for construction has been announced - up to $ 5bn. The expert assesses this statement of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Armenian Government as confirmation of Yerevan's intention to further develop nuclear energy as a strategic direction of the republic's energy system. Marjanyan believes that this task will be most effectively solved by the cooperation of Armenia with Russia.
According to the expert, by signing an agreement with the European Union on the actual decommissioning of the Metsamor NPP by 2026, the previous authorities of the republic dealt a rather powerful blow to the prospects for the development of Armenian energy. According to Marjanyan, as a result, Yerevan's possibilities for maneuvering in negotiations with Brussels on this issue are extremely limited today. "In any case, the preservation of nuclear energy for our country first of all depends from the desire, initiative and decisiveness of the Armenian authorities based on pragmatism. Since, in my opinion, the potential investor Rosatom has no problems with construction," the expert summed up.
