ArmInfo.Reducing the price of granulated sugar in Armenia is not the result of dumping, head of the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) Gegham Gevorgyan stated on October 3 in an interview with journalists.
According to him, the price fluctuates depending on the exchange price for the product. "The good news is that new players are appearing on the market for suppliers of sugar. And here it is important not their quantity, but the market share," Gevorgyan said.
The head of the antimonopoly regulator refrained from indicating today what is the share of the "King of sugar", businessman Samvel Aleksanyan, in the sugar market, only noting that his share has fallen by about 20% over the past year and a half. It should be noted that the lion's share of the sugar market in Armenia traditionally belongs to "Alex Holding", which is owned by ex-MP from the Republican Party Samvel Aleksanyan. According to 2017 data, 85 companies were operating in the sugar market, although Alexanyan's Alex Holding's share was 97%. In 2018, the number of companies decreased by 10, and the share of Alex Holding, although it dropped to 92%, it remained still high. According to media reports, Aleksanyan continues to carry the honorary title "King of Sugar" today. He owns the largest supermarket chain "Yerevan City" and another half hundred other companies and enterprises in various fields, including food and light industry.
