ArmInfo. In order to prevent coronavirus, the Central Bank of Armenia urges citizens to use non-cash means of payment and online banking services. This was noted in the message of the CBA.
According to the source, for the same purpose, the regulator will withdraw old (used) banknotes in circulation with new composite (unused) ones.
To note that from the moment of introduction of the 3rd generation banknotes to this day, some payment terminals do not accept them due to the lack of technical calibration of the machines. Moreover, new generation banknotes only occasionally appear in circulation, and most bank ATMs continue to issue old- style banknotes; new money is also rare in stores. Thus, the Central Bank was in no hurry with the exchange of notes and only with the danger of the spread of coronavirus, decided to do it at an accelerated pace.
To recall, the Central Bank of Armenia put into circulation new 3rd generation composite (hybrid) banknotes in 2018, November 22, on the day of the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the national currency - dram. Were put into circulation banknotes with a face value of 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 drams, and December 25 - banknotes with a face value of 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 drams. With their introduction, old-style banknotes are gradually being withdrawn from circulation, but very slowly.
