Armenia replaced Brazilian sugar with Russian one

In the first half of 2020, sugar was imported to Armenia mainly from Russia, while Brazil was traditionally the supplier of sugar to the Armenian  market.  Thus, according to the RA Customs Service, a total of 21.3  thousand tons of sugar were supplied to Armenia during the reporting  period with a y-o-y decline of 35% (against a 10.9% decline a year  earlier).  At the same time, the customs value decreased by 41.1%,  amounting to about $ 7 million.

According to the source, the lion's share (98%) was imported from  Russia, and the rest was distributed between Ukraine (1.3%), Belarus,  Kyrgyzstan, Italy, France, Syria, Germany, the Netherlands, Colombia,  Bulgaria, Costa Rica, and Brazil. Moreover, only 34 kg were imported  from Brazil, while a year earlier in the same period the volume was  leading (26.5 thousand tons).

According to the source, during the reporting period, Armenia  exported 23.2 tons of sugar for a total amount of $ 16.4 thousand  (with a 15.5-fold y-o-y growth in volume and 7.8-fold in cost). The  main export market was Russia (94.8%), while the remaining volume  fell to the USA (5.2%).

It should be noted that according to previously available data, 99.9%  of sugar imports to Armenia fall on the share of the "Alex-Grig"  company, which belongs to the family of the Armenian oligarch Samvel  Aleksanyan.
