ArmInfo. The WB will provide Armenia with a grant for the implementation of environmental programs. At a meeting on July 4, the RA Government approved the draft corresponding decree of the RA President.
As noted in the rationale for the draft decree, the agreement on the allocation of a grant, the amount of which is not reported, was signed on May 20 and 22, 2024. The document aims to provide funding for Armenia's sustainable landscapes programme, in particular in the context of protecting biodiversity, reclaiming abandoned mines, reforesting and regulating the relevant legislative framework and bringing it into line with the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement.
Armenia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. In addition to restoring forests and wetlands, the document will achieve the priorities set. Forests and wetlands that will be restored as valuable ecosystems are of paramount importance for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. The reduction of wetlands leads to changes in humidity in lowland semi-desert areas and mountain meadows. This process, in turn, contributes to increased droughts and decreased pasture productivity, and also leads to additional risks for livestock production.
