ArmInfo. The construction of an 8 km long bypass road around the Agarak archaeological site is ongoing within the framework of the North-South Road Corridor (Tranche 2) investment program.
As reported by the Road Department Foundation, active construction work is underway in the area of the Agarak-Voskevaz road junction. Asphalt paving, sub-layer laying, and other work are underway on different sections of the road.
North-South is one of the largest projects in the history of independent Armenia. This road will reduce the distance from the Iranian border to the Georgian border from 556 to 490 kilometers. The road will significantly facilitate access to the Black Sea not only for Armenia, but also for Iran. The program was planned to be completed within 4-5 years (it was launched on September 13, 2012), spending less than $1 billion, but today it has been implemented by 10%, and the amount of loans attracted as of the end of May 2024 was $800.7 million. In particular, ADB provided a loan of $170 million for the implementation of Tranche 2 (Ashtarak-Talin). As of May 23, 2024, $101,046,056.6 of this amount has been used (the deadline for using the funds is December 31, 2024). State co-financing amounted to about $40 million.
