ArmInfo. The Georgian government will expropriate land from owners in the Marneuli region for the construction of a new Rustavi-Sadakhlo highway leading to the border with Armenia.
As reported by "Novosti-Georgia", the Minister of Economy's corresponding order was published in the legislative gazette. The project is financed by the European Investment Bank under a loan agreement for the East-West international road project.
The new highway, which will run parallel to the existing road, will have four lanes and be approximately 30 kilometers long, including 11 bridges and crossings. The construction will cost 250 million euros.
It is noted that based on the text of the decree it can be concluded that several land owners have refused to sell their land or did not agree to the proposed price. As a result, the alienation of the plots will now occur by force. The order references Article 19 of the Constitution of Georgia, which allows for the confiscation of property in cases of urgent public needs, provided that full and fair compensation is given. The order identifies three owners of agricultural land in the Marneuli district whose lands are required for the construction of the road: Vano Gomiashvili, Renat Kerimov and Naib Amirov. The minister's decree can be appealed within a month at the Administrative Cases Collegium of the Tbilisi City Court.
