Armenia, Hungary to sign economic cooperation agreement

ArmInfo. On December 19, at a regular meeting, the Government of Armenia approved a proposal to sign an agreement on economic cooperation with the Government of Hungary.

As stated in the explanatory note to the document, the Agreement provides an opportunity to  develop and deepen long-term economic relations between the two  countries based on equality and mutual benefit in such areas as  trade, pharmaceutical industry, tourism, energy, transport and  logistics, agriculture and forestry, research and innovation,  environmental protection and water management and other areas of  cooperation of mutual interest.

The agreement is aimed at developing mutually beneficial cooperation  between the two countries, creating favorable conditions for  expanding economic ties, increasing business activity, and using the  existing potential. in the field of economic cooperation between the  two countries.

The document provides for the development and diversification of  mutually beneficial cooperation in all sectors of the economy of  mutual interest, as well as the creation of a joint economic  intergovernmental commission between Armenia and Hungary for the  purpose of coordinating and developing bilateral trade and economic  cooperation.

According to statistics, the foreign trade turnover of the Republic  of Armenia with Hungary amounted to $23.1 million (an increase of  14.2%). Armenian exports increased by 9.5% to 763.1 thousand, while  imports to the Republic of Armenia reached $22.3 million, with an  increase of 14.4%.

In 2012, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban returned Ramil Safarov  to Azerbaijan as a national "hero" who hacked to death with an axe  the Armenian officer Gurgen Markaryan, who was undergoing military  training in Hungary. After that, the then political leadership of  Armenia froze diplomatic relations with this country.

Following the meeting of Ararat Mirzoyan with his Hungarian  counterpart Peter Szijjarto (December 1, 2022), the parties reached  an agreement on the restoration of full-fledged diplomatic relations,  expressing their intention to open a new chapter in  Armenian-Hungarian relations based on mutual trust and respect for  international law. In May 2023, Armenia appointed a non-resident  ambassador to Hungary. He was Ashot Smbatyan. On November 28, at a  meeting of the Government of Armenia, a decision was made to open the  RA Embassy in Hungary.
