ArmInfo. Cargo transportation from Russia to Armenia decreased by 8% in 2024, in the opposite direction - by 29%. This is stated in a study by the International Freight Exchange ATI.SU.
The source notes that Armenia's main partners are Russia and Belarus. However, the European (France, Netherlands) and Asian (Kazakhstan) directions are actively growing. At the same time, analysts pointed to the resumption of growth in export-import transportation after the stabilization of the conflict in Nagorno- Karabakh.
At the same time, they noted a greater dependence on weather/seasonal factors, given that the bulk of Armenia's trade goes along the Georgian Military Road (via the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint), which has long required modernization. According to the Exchange data, in the first quarter, international cargo transportation for export from Armenia decreased by 59 p.p., in the second quarter - by 18 p.p., in the third quarter an increase of 11 p.p. was registered, and in the fourth quarter there was another decrease of 22 p.p. As for imports, the picture is as follows: the first quarter - a decline of 20 p.p., the second quarter - by 15 p.p., the third quarter - an increase of 20 p.p. And the fourth quarter - a decline of 9 p.p. At the same time, as stated in the study, domestic cargo transportation in 2024 decreased by 57%.
According to the RA Statistical Committee, the volume of cargo transportation in Armenia in 2024 decreased by 7.7% (against a 2.2% decline in 2023), amounting to 16,831.5 thousand tons. A decline was noted for all types of cargo transportation, with the exception of air transportation, which in 2024 maintained growth with a slight slowdown in rates from 45.5% to 24.5%, amounting to 42.2 thousand tons.
At the same time, the dominant road cargo transportation, which accounts for 79.5% or 13,389.6 thousand tons, decreased by 5.3% (against an increase of 8.7% in 2023).
Rail freight transportation in 2024 lingered in decline with a slowdown from 40.1% to 31.4%, amounting to 1,442.5 thousand tons.
1,957.2 thousand tons of natural gas were delivered via the main pipeline in 2024, with an annual decline of 0.2% (versus an 8.1% decline in 2023).
