
ArmInfo. In the Armenian interbank foreign exschange market, dollar transactions increased from May 12 to May 16, 2025, while ruble transactions decreased. Euro transactions have not been carried out for over two months. Specifically, the weekly trend for ruble transactions shifted from 64.3% growth to a 30.4% decrease, while the trend for dollar transactions changed from a 38.2% decrease to a 62% increase. As a result, the total weekly volume of dollar transactions once again surpassed ruble transactions by 1.7 times. The previous week the situation was reversed, with ruble transactions exceeding dollar transactions by 1.3 times.
During the reporting week, in the intra-bank foreign exchange market compared to the previous week, the trend of buying and selling dollars, euros and rubles shifted from a decline to growth, with high growth rates.As a result, from May 12 to May 16 May , the dram continued to strengthen against the dollar, decreasing from AMD 389.3 to AMD 386.8/$1, also showing signs of revaluation against the euro, dropping from AMD 441.5 to AMD 434.5 /1 EUR, while weakening against the ruble, falling from AMD 4.65 to AMD 4.73 /1 RUB. A year earlier, on May 16, 2024, the exchange rate was AMD 388 /$1, AMD 420 /1EUR, and AMD 4.23 /1 RUB, indicating an annual revaluation of the dram against the dollar, and a devaluation against the euro and ruble.
According to the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia, dollar transactions were conducted daily on the interbank foreign exchange market from May 12 to May 16 of this year (May 9 is a non-working day), with only two ruble transactions occurring on Wednesday and Thursday (May 14 and 15) simultaneously. The total weekly volume of dollar transactions amounted to $8.5 million with an average rate of AMD 387.49 /$1 (compared to AMD 389.89 /$1 a week earlier), and ruble transactions totaled 400 million rubles with an average rate of AMD 4.80 /1RUB (compared to AMD 4.79 /1RUB a week earlier). The highest volume of dollar transactions "appeared" on Tuesday (May 13) with $3.5 million, and the largest volume of ruble transactions occurred on Thursday (May 15) with 300 million rubles.
In the intrabank foreign exchange market from May 12 to 16, 2025, compared to the previous week (05- 08.05.25), the trend of buying and selling dollars shifted from an 11.5-9.8% decline to a 46.2-36.1% growth. This growth was also observed in the trend of buying and selling euros, which went from a 12.6- 26.4% decline to a 255-93% growth, and the trend of buying and selling rubles, which shifted from a 7.2- 37.8% decline to a 51.5-82.1% growth. As a result, during the reporting week, $154.5 million was purchased at an average rate of AMD 385.81/$1, 103.6 million euros at an average rate of AMD 429.33 /1EUR, and 20.6 billion rubles at an average rate of AMD 4.75 /1RUB. Additionally, $256.9 million were sold at an average rate of AMD 389.21/$1, 94.5 million euros at an average rate of AMD 438.16 /1EUR, and 3.4 billion rubles at an average rate of AMD 4.84 /1RUB. The highest volume of dollar purchases was recorded on Friday (May 16 - $37.7 million) with a maximum of sales on Monday (May 12 - and $65.5 million). The largest volume of ruble purchases occurred on the same day (May 12 - 4.8 billion rubles) with a maximum of sales on Friday (May 16 - 1.1 billion rubles), and for euro transactions, the largest volume of purchases was recorded on Wednesday (May 14 - 70.1 million euros) with a maximum of sales on Tuesday (May 13 - 22.4 million euros).
In January-February 2025, the Central Bank made interventions in the foreign exchange market. In February alone, the intervention totaled $10 million at a rate of AMD 394.19 /$1, and these were solely purchase operations. In the intra-bank foreign exchange market in January-February 2025, $960 million, 305.4 million euros and 106.6 billion rubles were purchased, and $1.4 billion, 543.4 million euros and 36.2 billion rubles were sold. This resulted in the purchase rates for February being AMD 394.17/$1, AMD 408.89 /1EUR and AMD 4.24 /1 RUB. The sales rates were AMD 396.87 /$1, AMD 415.57/1 EUR and AMD 4.33 /1 RUB, compared to those in December 2024: AMD 394.84r/$1, AMD 413.75 /1EUR, AMD 3.84/1RUB - for purchase, and AMD 398.16 /$1, AMD 420.09 /1 EUR, AMD 3.97 /1 RUB - for sales.
In January-February 202, transactions totaled $148 million for dollars , 7.3 billion rubles for ruble transactions, and 1 million euros for euro transactions(made only in February at the exchange rate of AMD 413.75 / 1EUR). During this period, the dram weakened to AMD 4.25 / 1RUB against the ruble and slightly strengthened to AMD 396.09 / $ 1 against the dollar compared to December 2024 rates of AMD 3.84 / 1 RUB and AMD 396.1 / $ 1. The largest volume of dollar transactions was made in January ($ 81 million), while ruble transactions peaked in February (over 5.5 billion rubles). The currency exchange platform, after eight years of "silence", resumed operations in June 2024. From June to October, $14.7 million worth of dollar transactions were carried, leading to a strengthening of the dram from June AMD 388.90 to October AMD 387.75 /$1. The currency exchange platform was inactive in November- December. In January-February 2025, dollar transactions totaling $1 million were carried out on the currency exchange platform, resulting in a strengthening of the dram from January AMD 398.75 to February AMD 397 /$1.
Let us recall that ruble transactions in the Armenian interbank currency market began on March 14, 2022. From that point until the end of the year, transactions totaling 8.7 billion rubles were carried out, with an additional 17.5 billion rubles projected for the entirety of 2023. During this period, the dram depreciated against the ruble in the interbank foreign exchange market dropping from AMD 4.86 to AMD 5.8 / 1RUB from March to December 2022. However, by the end of 2023, the dram appreciated against the ruble to AMD 4.47 / 1RUB.
