ArmInfo. There are certain structural problems within the economy; electricity generation decreased in May. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at a cabinet meeting on June 26.
, - explained RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan.
Nikol Pashinyan recalled that the current cabinet had repeatedly spoken about the need to diversify energy resources. And the fact that today the capacity of solar power plants is almost twice as large as the capacity of the operating nuclear power plant is a serious achievement, he noted.
At the same time, as a result of such growth, a qualitatively new situation has been created in the country in terms of managing the sphere. , - Pashinyan noted.
Earlier, ArmInfo reported that currently there are about 39 thousand autonomous stations with a total capacity of 510 megawatts in Armenia, which is, mind you, more than the installed capacity of the operating nuclear power plant unit even after modernization (448.25 MW). At the same time, their number continues to grow - by an average of 15 MW per month. Another 370.1 MW is generated by 84 solar stations (one of them is the industrial station "Masrik-1" with a capacity of 55 MW). After the launch of solar stations under construction in the republic, their number will be 131, and the total capacity will be 614.9 MW. Thus, the total volume of solar generation in the near future may exceed the mark of 1100 MW.
And if the Armenian government planned to increase the share of solar energy in the country's energy balance to 15% only by 2030, then by the end of 2024 the figure had already reached 10.4%, and in the first quarter of 2025 the share of solar energy in the overall structure of electricity production in Armenia was 11%. In monthly terms, in April the figure reached 14.4% (12.8% in April 2024), and in May 21.9% (12% in May last year). According to representatives of leading companies in the sector, by the end of the year they will reach 17-18%.
As Mesrop Mesropyan, head of the Public Services Regulatory Commission of the Republic of Armenia, stated in an interview with ArmInfo, the growth is impressive, but in a certain sense it carries risks for the entire energy system. That is, solar energy in Armenia is developing so successfully and quickly that the system cannot keep up with it. RA is still among the countries that do not have large storage battery stations, also known as energy storage systems (ESS), used to accumulate electricity and then release it. In this regard, the country's authorities are considering introducing a number of restrictions for solar stations.
