Regardless of name of Syunik Corridor, its logic contradicts  fundamental principles of EAEU -economist

ArmInfo.  Before choosing political names and beautiful packaging, it is very important to  understand the substantive consequences. Economist Hayk Farmanyan  writes about this, speaking about the expected transfer of control  over the Syunik corridor to the United States.

The economist noted that if Ilham Aliyev's wishes are fulfilled that  goods from Azerbaijan be transported through Syunik without any  control, that is, that goods from third countries be transported  through the territory of Armenia to Turkey or other countries without  customs control and clearance, then this will be considered a gross  violation of the rules of the customs territory of the EAEU. One of  the main principles of the EAEU is a single border for goods from  third countries and a clear procedure for their movement across the  territory of the EAEU under a single customs control. If Armenia  allows a corridor route where customs clearance is not carried out,  then this territory is effectively removed from the customs territory  of the EAEU. This not only undermines the logic of the single  economic space of the EAEU, but also unilaterally opens a section of  the border through which goods from third countries can freely pass  without any customs procedures.

In this case, the EAEU member states may raise the issue of fully or  partially depriving Armenia of its share in the budget of the  Eurasian Economic Union, since other EAEU states will face economic  distortions of the situation. "But the most important thing is that  Armenia will find itself alone, in the role of a party that has  created a regime operating outside the legislative space of the EAEU.  This situation will inevitably lead to a harsh reaction, and the  consequence may be the exclusion of Armenia from the EAEU or  concerted pressure in this direction. Therefore, regardless of what  name the Syunik corridor will have:  "peaceful", "transit" or  "internationalized zone", its corridor logic contradicts the  fundamental principles of the EAEU and is fraught with serious  geopolitical, economic and legal consequences for Armenia," the  economist believes.
